“Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word. When the rhythm and melody of language become a part of a child’s life, learning to read will be as natural as learning to walk and talk.” Berenice Cullinan and Brod Bagert. The ability of making an activity out of a book provides the child another fun opportunity to learn and exercise the message shared by the author. We have made 3 activities out of the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.

The Butterfly
Materials –
Fuzzy Sticks cut and shape to the size desired
Toilet paper roll
Colored paper
Liquid glue

The first one was a butterfly made out of a toilet paper roll (the body of the butterfly) and its wings that were made out of a colored paper. The antenas were made with fuzzy sticks attached to the inside of the toilet paper with tape. Both the body and wings were painted by Boy 2.3. I used regular liquid glue to attach the wings to the body of the butterfly.

The Caterpillar
Materials –
Egg carton
Paint
Goggly eyes (they can also be drawn)
Fuzzy sticks
Glue
Tape

The second activity was making a caterpillar out of an egg carton. I painted one of the egg cartons and Boy 2.3 painted the other one. I added goggly eyes with liquid glue to the front of it and fuzzy sticks to the top of it for the antenas.
